I do look forward to the Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum) emergence. They always seem to have (albeit from a very human point of view) a smile on their faces and will be on the wing maybe even into November. Yellow female and red male at North Cave Wetlands. Also a cousin, the Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii) a male taken on holiday in Corsica a week or so ago. Note the blue eyes. The Red-veined females are also yellow.
Everyone likes a Bee orchid, this one at North Cave Wetlands. Last year seems to have been a good year for them and this year not so bad. Their appearance does seem a bit random though. For instance, at Yorkshire Water's Tophill Low reserve 199 plants were recorded last year, but only 6 this year!

A good variety of dragons and damselflies on the wing at the wetlands at the moment. My favourite the male Emperors are patrolling their ponds. We don't get many Emerald Damsels but always nice to see them. The Red-eyed Damsels are proving elusive. They don't like to leave the water's edge and I am finding it difficult to bring the macro to bear on them and the telephoto doen't really cut it with such small subjects. First time I have seen the blotchy winged Praenubila form of the Four-spotted Chaser. Also in flight a male Black-tailed skimmer.

Searching the outskirts on foot near our holiday rental in Marseillan, South of France didn't reveal much in the way of diverse wildlife. There were plenty of Black Redstarts in the graveyard and the odd huge raptor overhead. The one scrubby field I found did on closer inspection have lots of blue butterflies particularly around the edges. Many turned out to be nothing more exotic than Common Blue and Brown Argus though I was pleased to identify Lang's short-tailed Blue as well. It was only on returning home and uploading my pics that I discovered I also had photos of Long-tailed Blue, which was nice! They do look superficially similar. Plenty of Mallow Skipper on the wing too.
I attended a very interesting Flora Locale course last week - lowland heath restoration at Prees Heath in Shropshire. The course was run by Stephen Lewis of Butterfly Conservation and Phil Putwain of Ecological Restoration Consultants Ltd. In short the heath was turned into an airfield during the last war and following the war the land was turned over to agriculture and improved, mainly for potatoes. The Silver-studded Blues who are heavily reliant on heather and a black ant population had managed to cling on in the fragments of remaining heathland. It was extremely interesting to learn how the heathland had been restored and the constant challenges faced in maintaining the infertile soil for the heathers. Prees Heath is maintained principally for the Silver-studded and it was great to see good numbers though we were present just after peak emergence.
I got this year's Green Hairstreak fix at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's Strensall Common reserve just North of York. It is a big boggy Heathland site and I only had chance to explore a part of it. Lots of interesting plants and moths. Cuckoo was also heard calling.

Operation Orange-tip has been a great success this year. I have managed to get lots of shots of males stationary and with their wings open. I need to thank the Orange-tip populations of both North Cave Wetlands and Leven Canal for their help in making these photographs a possibility. Most years they are so flighty they just don't stay still for long enough. The photos taken using Nikon D700 with 105mm f2.8 macro lens and also the Canon G9 compact which is proving extremely useful for macro shots. You can shove the G9 right into the bushes and up to 1cm away from your subjects, it is just great!

I have really started to notice the Weevils at North Cave Wetlands in particular. They seem quite widespread mainly on nettles in unimproved locations, though there are many similar looking species. I believe the Weevils here to be Phyllobius, either Pomaceus or Argentatus. I do enjoy a Weevil. The Weevils will be larger in the summer so I will keep an eye on them!

Nightingales are now arriving back in Lincolnshire, unfortunately they don't tend to come as far as Yorkshire any more. It was a dull day today when I had the time to visit and the Nightingale pictured didn't sing for long periods of time. It sang quite short loud tuneful bursts and then hopped into the undergrowth to look for more food, still recovering his strength after the long journey back. The Nightingale song seemed to wind up one Blackcap in particular who kept flying in to the tree next door to sing as loud as he could. It was a valiant effort, but the Nightingale did easily shout him down! Even a Wren seemed to be getting excitable with much trilling, bobbing up and down and tail shaking.
After the theory session we headed for North Marsh Hide and were rewarded with good views of Kingfisher and a swimming Grass Snake. Had we been in the hide earlier in the morning we would have seen the male and female Kingfishers perching together for over two hours!
Spotted Fritillary

Always pleased to see a Fritillary I wasn't quite sure which flavours would be on offer in August in the south. The Spotted Fritillaries (Melitaea didyma) above and below are quite widespread, but when fresh are extremely striking. The males in particular are flame red and the photos don't really do the brightness justice. The bright colour and clear sub-marginal crescent shaped spots are indicative of the southern European meridionalis form. Quite a small Fritillary, they seemed to enjoy short energetic flights from flower to flower staying low to the ground.

Below is Weaver's Fritillary also knows as the Violet Fritillary (Boloria dia) which looks superficially very similar from above to the Pearl-bordered Fritillary (Boloria euphrosyne) which we are fortunate to have still hanging on at a few sites in North Yorkshire. I only saw the Weavers lower down the mountain, but apparently they are often seen at greater altitudes. Took me a while to identify as they are meant to be principally a May/June species, so presumably there are a couple of broods in the south. The Weaver's/Violet Fritillary is also not dissimilar to Titania's Fritillary (Boloria Titania) but she is an Alpine butterfly with much stronger V shaped markings around the outer upper wings.
Violet Fritillary

Pictured below here is the Knapweed Fritillary (Melitaea phoebe) which is very variable when seen from above in lots of different colour variations. The underside at first glance is also very similar to the Spotted Fritillary, but it has the orange dots in the post discal band which distinguish it. Knapweed Frit I also saw up and down the mountain. There are similar Melitae species to the Knapweed in Eastern Europe and Sicily, the adults indistnguishable although the larvae are quite different. I do enjoy a Fritillary!

The Southern White Admiral was a butterfly I expected and hoped to see in the south of France, most likely the second brood of the year in August. A handsome butterfly and a truly majestic glider, beating its wings only rarely, it was easy to locate along mountain paths. However, it requires patience waiting for one to land near to you to pose for a photo. The males patrol their territories and occasionally rest on the edge of a bush at around head height to see off potential competitors. This is great for underside shots, but upperside photo opportunities are rarer. The upperside is the most significant difference to its northern cousin the White Admiral (Limenitis Camilla). The Southern White Admiral has a striking iridescent blue sheen to its upperside wings. The sheen is quite similar to that of the Purple Emperor in that it is only visible from certain angles when the light is right.
Members of the Nymphalidae family including the Admirals, Emperors, Fritillaries and Browns, also known as brush-footed butterflies, have reduced first thoracic limbs (front legs!) and only use two pairs to walk and stand on. In the photo above you can clearly see the reduced front limbs under the eye. Females use the sensory hairs on these fore limbs to "taste" food plants before egg laying but I'm not sure about the males. Riodinidae metal mark butterflies such as the Duke of Burgundy, have also evolved these limbs, most probably parallel evolution. Must be a naturally selected benefit.
